Kenya Power Responds To Gachagua’s Nyeri Event Blackout

Kenya Power has rejected online allegations that power was intentionally turned off at the ACK Church in Mathira, where former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was attending a service.

Kenya Power explained on Sunday, March 23, via social media that regions designated for maintenance had been alerted the day before.

“Good afternoon sir, Kindly note that various parts of Nyeri County and its environs were scheduled for a planned maintenance today, 23rd of March, as circulated on our platforms,” part of the statement,” read Kenya Power’s statement.

“This is to ensure the provision of continuous and reliable power.”

Kenya Power was responding to accusations from an online skeptic who claimed that electricity had been turned off to prevent the former DP from addressing the gathering.

“I’m hearing Kenya Power decided to switch off lights in the whole of Nyeri town today coz Riggy G is attending a Church service at ACK St Peter’s Cathedral. Nyeri people can you confirm this, please? Do you have electricity?” the X post read.

Kenya Power issued the first notice on Saturday, warning that the general regions of Nyeri, Mweiga, Naromoru, and Tetu will be affected from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In Nyeri, the national utility covered the entire town, Kangemi, Asian Quarters, Witemere, Temple Road, Outspan Hospital, Golf Club, Kandara, Ring Road, and Nyeri Polytechnic.

Karatina, State Lodge, and Ragati were also included in the maintenance as having a blackout during the same time period.

Most notably, Gachagua was attending an Anglican Church of Kenya service where politicking was prohibited just a week before.

During a church service on March 16, ACK Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit announced that politicians would no longer be allowed to give public addresses within the church.

“I want to give directions that from today henceforth, In any Anglican congregation, there will be no opportunity for any political leader to have a speech in the church,” he declared.

“We will mention their names, they will wave their hands if they so wish to speak to the congregants, it will be done outside of the sanctuary not only today but in all our dioceses and churches.”
