Kivutha Kibwana Aims A Dig At COTU’s Atwoli After Fatherhood News

Kivutha Kibwana, former Makueni Governor, congratulated Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli on becoming a father.

Kibwana also asked him to consider standing down as SG.

He also urged Atwoli to seek paternity leave, challenging the union’s assessment of Atwoli’s term in the role. Atwoli has served as COTU SG for the past 23 years.

The former governor’s positive message took a turn when he urged COTU to use Atwoli’s paternity leave to discuss whether it was appropriate for union leaders to hold their positions indefinitely.

“I heartily congratulate the COTU Secretary-General, Francis Atwoli, and his family on the new addition to their family,” he stated.

“COTU Kenya should grant their Secretary-General a well-deserved paternity leave, during which they can also discuss: Should COTU and trade union leadership be a lifetime tenure?” Kibwana challenged.

Atwoli responded by defending his employment, claiming that, like Kibwana, he possessed irreplaceable abilities, a vocation with no expiration date, and the expertise required by the union.

“Secondly, you and I are age mates. And I just saw you being appointed as a Professor of Law at Daystar University the other day. So, Prof, help me understand—when does your profession come to an end?

“Can a professor really stop reading, teaching, and writing? When will you stop engaging your mind?” Atwoli asked.

The COTU SG revealed that, in his capacity, he had battled for Kenyan workers to be granted paternity leave and even developed rules to facilitate this.

“I have fought for Kenyan workers to receive paternity leave as part of my work in bringing about the five sets of labour laws,” Atwoli stated.

“You will realise that these laws, along with the Constitution of Kenya 2010, as stated in Article 41, have empowered the Kenyan worker above all else in the region.”

After seven years of marriage, journalist Mary Kilobi and her husband Atwoli had their first child together.

Their son, known only as Atwoli Junior, is the most recent addition to the SG family, which already includes other adult children.

Kilobi and Atwoli’s romance began in 2016, and their traditional wedding took place in 2018.

Their marriage provoked outrage when Kilobi’s ex-fiancé accused Atwoli of being a “wife snatcher.”
