Ruto CS Reveals Spending 5 Months In Kamiti Maximum Prison

Opiyo Wandayi, the Energy Cabinet Secretary, revealed on Saturday, April 12, that he was once imprisoned at Kamiti Maximum Prison while on campus.

Wandayi described his stay in prison with the late Oduor because of their commitment to Raila.

The CS spoke at Ramba High School in Siaya during the funeral of George Oduor, a former Premier Raila Odinga adviser.

Wandayi alleged that following Raila’s 1997 call for political reforms, he was arrested alongside Oduor and other youth comrades by police officials.

“You know, those days when you were a youth under Baba, being arrested was very normal. You would be arrested every other day,” Wandayi stated.

“In 1997, I found myself arrested together with George (Oduor), and we spent almost ten days at Kilimani Police Station. Back then, there was no time limit for being incarcerated.”

“Later on, we found ourselves at Kamukunji Police Station and eventually ended up in Kamiti, where we stayed with George (Oduor) and other comrades. In Kamiti, we spent about five months with him,” he expressed.

At the time, university students, particularly those from the University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, Moi University, and Egerton University, played significant roles in the reform movement.

Their efforts included public protests and marches, which were frequently severely suppressed.

They also published radical bulletins and periodicals to raise awareness and develop ties with civil society organizations.

Wandayi confessed that during that time, Oduor’s allegiance to Raila was clear, as he remained steadfast despite threats and harassment from authorities.

“George remained very, very firm and committed while we were in Kamiti,” Wandayi recalled.

The Energy CS also praised George’s honesty and integrity to his supervisor.
