EXPLAINER: How to Own a Home Via The Affordable Housing Programme

Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has stated that those who have saved longer in the Affordable Housing Programme and have larger families will be given priority when awarding homes once the project is completed.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 13, Mwaura stated that the government will keep the process of assigning the houses open.

“The process is simple and fair. We will start by notifying those who have registered for the program when the houses are ready,” Mwaura said.

He added: “The process will ensure the allocation is done fairly, based on the date the person started saving, their family size, and the demand for houses in each category.”

“When the affordable housing project is completed, the process of allocating houses will start immediately. This program aims to provide affordable houses to Kenyans,” Mwaura said.

The Affordable Housing Program will also adhere to the rigorous guideline of “one Kenyan, one home,” which states that each person can only receive one house.

This rule is intended to allow more individuals to own a home.

Kenyans who wish to participate in this program are urged to register through the Boma Yangu website.

They are also urged to save on a regular basis and stay up to date on new housing projects in order to maximize their chances of purchasing a home once they are done.

“Registered members will be notified and asked to select a unit after which they will be told how much they need to have saved to own it,” said Mwaura.

“Allocation is fair, based on savings, family status, and demand in each category. And remember, under the affordable housing scheme, it is strictly one Kenyan, one home.”

Kenyans are invited to apply for and profit from this project, which is part of Kenya Kwanza’s BETA (Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda) initiative.

“Since September 2022, the Affordable Housing Programme has created over 25,000 direct and indirect jobs, according to the government. A total of 4,888 housing units are now available for sale.”

“Kenyans are encouraged to apply and benefit from this transformative initiative under the BETA plan,” Mwaura said.
