EXPLAINER: WHY Gachagua’s DCP Party Launch Has Been Cancelled

The Democracy for the Citizens Party launch, scheduled for Tuesday, June 3, at Kasarani Stadium, has been cancelled.

Former KICC board chair Irungu Nyakera stated on Monday, June 2, that this new development was the result of being denied a location for the event.

However, he stated that fresh dates and a venue would be announced in due course and that the minor setback would not deter their resolve.

“The DCP party launch that was to be held on Thika Road has been called off, awaiting a new venue and date,” Nyakera stated.

“But let it be known that you can deny us a venue, but you cannot deny us our voice. We will rise.”

Rigathi Gachagua, the party’s leader and former Deputy President, had previously confirmed that the launch celebration would take place at Kasarani Stadium’s gymnasium in a booking letter.

The party wants to reserve the venue for Ksh3.7 million to be utilized for speeches, performances, and interactive sessions targeted at informing Kenyans about the party’s vision, program, and leadership.

According to the letter, approximately 5,000 people are scheduled to attend the event.

“I am writing to formally request to book the Kasarani Stadium Gymnasium for our official party launch event, scheduled for Tuesday, June 3, 2025, from 8am to 5pm,” the letter read in part.

“The event is expected to host approximately 5,000 attendees, including party members, supporters, invited guests, and press members.”

However, just a few days later, on May 28, Sports Kenya Director-General Gabriel Komora prevented the former DP from utilizing the site, citing the impending African Nations Championship (CHAN) in 2025.

“We regret to inform you that the venue will not be available due to prior bookings by sports teams,” Komora wrote.

“We are also not taking further bookings due to preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN).”

He added: “Kindly consider looking for an alternative venue. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and we take this opportunity to thank you for your request to utilise the facility.”

This was despite Sports Kenya advising the party that the venue was available on May 21, and the sports complex’s management even accepting their booking for the party’s launch.

DCP further claimed they had even paid for the venue and received an invoice. It, however, blamed President William Ruto for intervening with its plans.
