Bernard Kitur, MP for Nandi Hills, has claimed that his life is at risk as a result of his ongoing efforts to bring to justice an organ transplant syndicate related to a private hospital in Eldoret.

The hospital is suspected of performing unlawful kidney transplants.

Speaking before the National Assembly Health Committee on Thursday, June 5, to assist with the investigation, the MP said that the ongoing threats to his life occurred as recently as Wednesday evening.

He said that the intimidation came from hospital administrators, DCI investigators, and even local authorities.

On Wednesday evening, he stated that DCI agents traced down and stopped his official vehicle near the Brookside district of Eldoret.

“It so happens that when I was getting this information, my security was compromised, even as late as yesterday evening,” he stated.

“The intimidation was by the county police commandant of Uasin Gishu and the DCIO and his team.”

He added: “Yesterday at 11.30, my vehicle around Brookside was blocked by a DCI vehicle, and officers who were in that vehicle were one Osman Ndiema and a driver. They tracked my vehicle, and they cornered it around Brookside.”

He further stated that, while he was not in the vehicle, his official workers were in it and were returning to his office after gathering critical paperwork about the situation.

Kitur further said that the county commandant and DCIO were acting on the orders of Kesses MP Swarup Mishra.

During the committee meeting, he explained how he became aware of the situation.

Kitur added that he had received communication from two of the victims who had their kidneys removed after being enticed with a large sum.

He said that the hospital took away the two’s national identity cards and issued them alien ID cards, which were then used to modify their medical records.

Although one of the victims was promised Ksh1.2 million for the procedure, the MP claims he was only given Ksh50,000 before the surgery and then Ksh400,000 afterward, with the remainder not forthcoming.

However, he added that the two victims have also been intimidated by other players in an attempt to prevent them from testifying in the case, including being bribed with money.

In April, Deutsche Welle, German media ZDF, and Der Spiegel published a special investigation into the international organ trafficking syndicate.

The German media giants revealed that recipients pay up to $200,000 (Ksh25.9 million) for an organ transplant harvested from vulnerable Kenyans.
