CLEAN CITY: Nairobi CBD Flooded With Heat-Resistant Litter Bins

Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja has erected contemporary Glasdon Jubilee 110-litre litter bins around the central business district (CBD).

The bins are composed of Durapol, a long-lasting material that is heat and tamper-resistant. An enhancement from the smaller bins that were put in a few months before.

The overall installation of CBD bins began on Sunday, May 18, led by Nairobi County Chief Environment Officer Geoffrey Mosiria.

Following the removal of previously established bins, the new ones are intended to serve pedestrians.

On Friday, June 6, 2025, city hall personnel installed updated dumpsters to help improve the city’s cleanliness and hygiene.

The new bins have a domed top to prevent rainwater from pooling inside and a secure three-point locking system to prevent illegal access.

To counteract illegal advertising, which has been a regular problem in the city, the dumpsters have a particular anti-posting finish.

Internally, they include corrosion-resistant plastic liners, and some models feature lightweight molded polyethylene for increased durability.

The initial batch has been placed in high-traffic places, and more will be deployed in neighborhoods, parks, and transportation hubs soon.

Sakaja explained that these installations are part of the county’s environmental management plan.

The governor, while inspecting the newly introduced bins on Friday, June 6, stated that these bins are a statement that shows Nairobi values order, hygiene, and modernity.

“These are not just bins. They’re a statement about the Nairobi we’re building, one that values order, hygiene, and modernity.”

“We’re investing in modern infrastructure, but real change will come when wananchi also take responsibility and dispose of their waste properly,” Sakaja said.
