IEBC Official Arrested During Crackdown On Fake Certificates

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested five public officials, including an Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) official, as part of an ongoing crackdown on bogus academic degrees.

The suspects, who are current or past workers of several governmental institutions, are suspected of using fake academic credentials to gain employment and/or advancement.

This resulted in the illicit acquisition of public funds worth tens of millions of shillings.

The arrests, which involved other government entities, were announced in a statement by the EACC.

They are the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA), the National Syndemic Diseases Control Council (NSDCC), the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), and the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC).

The IEBC worker was arrested for allegedly fabricating a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Resource Management from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST).

She was arraigned before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court and accused of a variety of offenses, including forgery and uttering fraudulent documents.

She contested the charges and was released on Ksh200,000 cash bail or Ksh800,000 alternative bond.

In the instance of NSDCC, the official was accused of falsifying a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work from the University of Nairobi.

The fake credential was allegedly used to gain employment with the Council. As a result, the defendants fraudulently earned wages totaling Ksh16,495,296.72.

He is expected to be charged in court on Wednesday, June 11, on allegations of illegal acquisition of public funds, deception of a principal, forgery, and uttering a false document.

In addition to the criminal procedures, the EACC indicated that it would launch civil recovery proceedings in court to reclaim all salaries, allowances, and perks wrongfully obtained by the accused.
