Resign Immediately!’ – Opposition Tells CS Murkomen

Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen’s recent controversial shoot-to-kill order has prompted opposition leaders to demand his immediate resignation or face impeachment.

The leaders, notably Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa, claimed that Murkomen’s latest shoot-to-kill order required him to resign immediately or be removed from the Ministry.

They were speaking in Githurai after visiting the family of Boniface Kariuki, a dead hawker.

“Mr Murkomen, the least you can do as the Cabinet Secretary for Interior is to resign immediately,” Wamalwa stated.

“We fully support the impeachment motion being brought against you, and we urge all opposition Members of Parliament to back it without hesitation.”

According to Wamalwa, such words, together with previous occurrences in the country, justify abuse of office and imperil residents’ lives.

Wamalwa’s opinions mirror those of his colleague, Kalonzo Musyoka, who lambasted Murkomen.

“We want to ask President Ruto and CS Murkomen, is this the good job you have been talking about? Shooting youths and killing them aimlessly—is this what you are calling a good job?” Wamalwa continued.

The impeachment motion is apparently being prepared by parliamentarians who were outraged by Murkomen’s public comments during a tour of Nairobi’s CBD following the June 25 protests, which resulted in several deaths and injuries.

Murkomen’s controversial words instructed police officers to shoot and kill anyone who approached a police station to steal from it.

“Anyone approaching a police station, shoot them; a gun is not a toy,” Murkomen said.

His sentiments were backed by more MPs from the camp.

Following these comments, some MPs from former DP Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) announced plans to file an impeachment resolution against Murkomen, which Wamalwa strongly supports.

“This Parliament must stand firm. The Interior Cabinet Secretary has overstepped his mandate by issuing unconstitutional directives that endanger lives. We cannot sit back and watch,” Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji said on Sunday.

Although the motion has yet to be tabled, opposition leaders have vowed to hold Murkomen accountable for his words.

The Interior CS has been put on notice as the country’s incidences of forced disappearances, police violence, and insecurity continue to rise.
