Citizen TV Hands Miguna Miguna Blockbuster Interview After Matiang’i’s Claims

Outspoken lawyer Miguna Miguna is ready for what could be an explosive interview with Citizen TV, after the media outlet granted his written request.

On Wednesday, July 2, Miguna demanded that Citizen TV’s top executives interview him in response to former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i’s interview on the same network.

According to Miguna, the former powerful CS, who just announced his ambition to run for president in the 2027 General Election, was not thoroughly questioned about the blips in his stint in government from 2013 to 2022.

“Because Citizen TV gave Fred Okeng’o Matiang’i an exclusive platform to lie about all the atrocities he presided over between 2013 and 2022 with hardly any significant challenges by Sam Gituku, I request an opportunity for an exclusive interview as a rejoinder because I was one of his victims,” Miguna stated.

However, the lawyer stated that he preferred having the interview conducted live but remotely because he is currently stationed in Ontario, Canada.

Hours later, Miguna published a statement from Linus Kaikai, Head of the Editorial Department of Royal Media Services (RMS), the company that owns Citizen TV.

It verified that his request had been granted and that an interview would be scheduled within the following seven days.

“Wachira (Waruru—Managing Director at RMS) and I have received your request for an interview on Citizen TV,” the message read.

“We are delighted to confirm that you will be availed the interview opportunity within the next 7 days. See you live on Citizen TV!”

The quarrel between Miguna and Matiang’i resulted from the former’s deportation from Kenya in 2018, which was ordered by Matiang’i.

The reason was Miguna’s prominent role in the symbolic “swearing-in” of opposition leader Raila Odinga as “People’s President” at Uhuru Park. Miguna administered the oath.

This occurred on January 30, 2018, following the contentious 2017 presidential election, which Raila lost to Uhuru Kenyatta.

The Jubilee government, then led by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto, saw this act as traitorous and a direct challenge to state power. A swift crackdown on individuals engaged in it followed.

Miguna Miguna was arrested on February 2, 2018, and detained incommunicado for several days. He was charged with treason for his participation in the event.

During the fiasco, Matiang’i claimed Miguna Miguna was not a Kenyan citizen.

The government argued he lost his Kenyan citizenship when he became a Canadian citizen in 1988 (the former constitution prohibited dual citizenship).

They further claimed that he had not properly re-registered his Kenyan citizenship following the 2010 Constitution, which allowed him multiple nationalities.

Miguna angrily denied these allegations, claiming he was a Kenyan citizen by birth and had never abandoned his citizenship.

He claimed that the government’s measures were illegal and politically motivated to silence him.

Despite several court orders for his release and appearance in court, Miguna was forcibly deported to Canada in February 2018. He was allegedly drugged and loaded onto a plane.

He attempted to return in March 2018, but was met with another dramatic confrontation at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), where he was imprisoned for days before being forced to return to Dubai.
