‘I Don’t Know Failure!’ – MP Babu Owino Speaks Out On Ruto Impeachment

Babu Owino, Embakasi East Member of Parliament, has ruled out the prospect of bringing an impeachment resolution against President William Ruto.

Taking to his official X account, the MP answered a Kenyan who criticized him for actively advocating against Ruto, despite the fact that as an MP, he has the authority to commence the process of his removal.

“I usually see Babu Owino at protests, which makes me wonder, if he really wants Ruto to go, why doesn’t he table an impeachment motion against him in Parliament?” a Kenyan asked on X.

In a rapid response, the MP defended himself for not introducing such a motion.

Owino said that 90% of MPs in Parliament are compromised, implying that the motion would fail.

“I don’t know failure because 90 per cent of MPs are compromised,” the MP said.

The Embakasi East MP is one of the few legislators who support Kenyan youngsters throughout their rallies.

During the June 25 memorial protests, Babu Owino joined Gen Z youths in the Nairobi CBD, where he was enthusiastically and bravely greeted.

Owino has also been at the forefront of advocating for improved leadership, condemning the current increase in police brutality cases in the country.

The calls for President Ruto’s impeachment surfaced on Tuesday, as People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua pushed MPs to launch one.

According to Karua, it would “offer a chance to ventilate and sensitise Kenyans and the world of what is going on.”

“Parliament can redeem itself, and even the few who speak for the people can initiate impeachment against the president,” Karua said.

An MP may seek impeachment for a severe violation of the Constitution or any other law. The motion needs to be backed by at least one-third of all MPs.

In 2015, opposition MPs (from CORD) made headlines when around 105 signed a motion to impeach then-President Uhuru Kenyatta for purported constitutional infractions, such as his management of teacher pay increases.

The motion produced no results, and therefore no president has ever been impeached.
