WHO Honours Uhuru Kenyatta For Championing Pandemic Agreement
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has received global recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO) for his critical contribution in advancing the WHO Pandemic Agreement.
The WHO Pandemic Agreement is a global commitment by WHO member states to collaborate to prevent, prepare for, and respond to pandemics.
During the 78th World Health Assembly in May of this year, the former Head of State was praised for his direction and commitment during the agreement’s negotiation process.
On July 10, 2025, Uhuru accepted the award at a special celebration hosted at the WHO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, which was attended by other high-profile dignitaries.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO Director General, signed the certificate of recognition.
“His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta, former President of Kenya. In recognition of your key role in championing and advocating for the WHO Pandemic Agreement that was adopted by the Seventy-eighth World Health Assembly on May 20, 2025,” read the certificate.

He was honored alongside leaders from 25 other countries throughout the world.
Albania, Costa Rica, Croatia, and Fiji have all had their current or former presidents or prime ministers recognised.
Other countries include France, Germany, Greece, Indonesia, Italy, Kenya, Korea, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Rwanda, Senegal, Serbia, South Africa, Spain, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom.
“The adoption by the World Health Assembly of the Pandemic Agreement was a historic moment in global health,” said Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
“But we would not have reached that moment without sustained political advocacy from the highest levels.”

According to Ghebreyesus, the Pandemic Agreement signifies a worldwide commitment to building a stronger international health architecture based on equality, cooperation, and shared responsibility.
The latest honor adds to the former Head of State’s collection of accolades.
Uhuru received an award in 2023 for his contributions to peaceful conflict resolution in Northern Ethiopia.
Likewise, in 2022, he was honoured for his outstanding role in promoting peace, security and stability in Burundi and the Great Lakes region as a whole.
