Nairobi County Installs New Bins, Warns of Heavy Fines To Vandals

Nairobi residents who fail to properly dispose of waste at authorized waste bin locations face significant fines. This followed the county’s decision to replace rubbish containers.

The county has officially initiated a waste management crackdown in response to previous protests that left the Central Business District (CBD) filthy, vandalized, and most rubbish bins smashed.

According to the County’s Chief Officer for Environment, Geoffrey Mosiria, the county has begun reinstalling all of the vandalized bins.

To ensure their upkeep, the county will take strict measures.

Mosiria stressed that the dumpsters were more than just installations; they reflected the county’s goal of restoring cleanliness, dignity, and order to the city.

“I appeal to all Nairobi residents: let us take responsibility. If you see anyone vandalising, misusing, or ignoring these bins, speak up and take action,” Mosiria implored.

“A clean city is not built by the government alone; it is built by all of us.”

To ensure that the county achieves its highest levels of cleanliness, the county government has issued seven strict instructions targeted at reducing public hygiene infractions.

The guidelines include high fines for individuals who fail to use designated trash bins, bans on hawking in unapproved locations, and the closure of businesses that lack suitable waste disposal systems.

Mosiria stated that roadside food vendors operating without disposal buildings would be limited, and private garbage collectors would be licensed and regulated.

“Moving forward, we are ready to make unpopular but necessary decisions,” Mosiria said.

He expressed rising dissatisfaction with pollution and disorganization in the city’s public spaces.

Furthermore, the county has prohibited the burning of waste in open spaces within city borders, and businesses and buildings around the city have been instructed to keep their frontages clean.

The county will also deploy CCTV cameras in identified areas to monitor and deter illegal dumping and vandalism of public facilities.

“These steps may not win applause from everyone, but they are necessary. We cannot clean our city while tolerating behaviours that dirty it,” the county leader emphasised.

The county had previously erected similar bins across the city to preserve cleanliness; but, during the various protests that erupted, most, if not all, of these bins were destroyed.
