New Police Uniform Set To Debut On August 31, IG Kanja Confirms

General duty police officers will, from Monday, August 31, start wearing new uniforms, ditching their current navy-blue uniform, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has announced.

The new uniform will be unveiled by President William Ruto on Friday, August 28, during the passing out parade of more than 6000 police constables who have completed their training at the Kenya Police Training College in Kiganjo.

Kanja said the new attire will be introduced to general duty officers beginning Monday, August 31, following recommendations made during a public participation exercise conducted in 2023.

“On Friday God willing, the Head of State will be commission new uniforms for the Kenya Police Service (KPS) so that we will have a national roll out of the same in the coming weeks,” Kanja stated.

According to the police boss, officers had expressed their preference for a different uniform during the exercise, prompting the National Police Service to revert to the attire that had previously been approved.

“We have been using the blue, the deep blue, so we are just reverting back to the one that was agreed upon,” he added.

The officers will start wearing the new uniforms from Monday, and they will be rolled out gradually to all the KPS officers in the coming weeks.

The graduating officers will initially wear the new attire before being gradually introduced to other general duty officers across the country.

According to Kanja, the change is expected to improve the morale of police officers and enhance service delivery.

“This is also going to be a force multiplier in terms of morale boosting for our officers, especially the new recruits,” the IG said.

The change will, however, not affect all units of the National Police Service at once.

Officers serving in the Administration Police Service and General Service Unit will retain their current uniforms as the new attire is rolled out to general duty officers.

The uniform change comes three years after the 2023 public participation exercise, in which police officers were consulted on the attire they preferred for their duties.
