Former MP Collapses, Dies Throwing KEWOPA Into Mourning
Catherine Nyamato, a famous veteran legislator and former Nominated Member of Parliament, has passed away.
Nyamato had the distinction of being the first Gusii woman MP.
Former President Daniel Arap Moi nominated her within the then-ruling KANU party, resulting in her pioneering achievement. She led from 1997 to 2002.
According to sources, Nyamato fainted unexpectedly beside the roadside near her property in Kijauri, Nyamira County, on Wednesday.
She was apparently interacting with young people working on a local project when the event happened.
She was promptly sent to Summit Hospital, a nearby hospital, where she was tragically pronounced dead.
The news of her death sent shockwaves throughout Kenya, generating an outpouring of grief and tributes from both ordinary individuals and notable figures.
Many people flocked to social media and public forums to grieve her death and honor her extraordinary achievements in public service.
Nyamato wore several caps before her death, both inside and outside of parliament.
She served as Narc-Kenya’s National Women Leader and was elected Secretary General of the League of Kenyan Women Voters.

The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) has mourned Nyamato as a daring fighter for women’s rights who publicly championed gender equality, fought against FGM, and inspired generations of Kenyan female leaders.

Former IEBC Commissioner Roselyne Akombe also lamented the former MP, describing her as a second mother who cared for her throughout her school years.
”This loss is so deep. So devastating. Catherine Nyamato took me in as her own daughter when I was in university and mentored me,” Akombe wrote.

“I have lost my second mother, whom I loved so dearly and who meant so much for our family.”
Education CS Julius Ogamba praised Nyamato’s tireless and unselfish efforts to uplift her people, as well as her integrity, compassion, and humility.
She recently ran for the Nyamira Women’s Representative position but did not win.
She was enrolled in Strathmore University’s Bachelor of Leadership Management program at the time of her death.
