Revenue Officer Arrested For Demanding Ksh435,000 Bribe In Kilifi

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has detained a Kilifi County Revenue Collection Officer who was caught seeking a Ksh435,000 bribe.

According to the EACC, the suspect is a building inspector with the Watamu Municipality’s approvals unit who reportedly solicited bribes to secure construction clearances.

According to EACC, a complainant alleged that county authorities visited a construction site in the Timboni area and requested Ksh73,000 for wall building.

An additional payment of Ksh362,000 was also requested for other structures, a sum that EACC claims was purposefully inflated for financial advantage and exploitation.

β€œAccording to the complainant, county revenue officers visited his construction site in the Timboni area of Watamu and demanded Kes73,000 for wall construction and Kes362,000 for other structures,” stated EACC.

“The amount is said to have been deliberately inflated for personal financial gain.”

On March 25, 2026, the EACC received the allegation and swiftly confirmed a bribe demand of Ksh400,000.

EACC inspectors responded swiftly to prevent additional exploitation of persons seeking valid construction licenses.

The following day, March 26, the Commission carried out a targeted operation at the municipal offices.

This resulted in the arrest of the revenue official suspected of seeking the bribe, which was part of broader anti-corruption enforcement measures, according to EACC.

The defendant was then led to the EACC Upper Coast Regional Office in Malindi for processing before being transferred to Malindi Police Station and freed on Ksh20,000 cash bail.

This new EACC arrest adds to a long series of recent arrests, the most disturbing of which involved an impostor posing as a National Intelligence Service (NIS) officer and arranging a Ksh15 million fraudulent contract scheme.

EACC revealed that the suspect falsely presented himself as a senior NIS officer attached to the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) Board.

He used this guise to deceive a construction firm into undertaking a non-existent project at Kaptis Primary Special School in Hamisi Sub-County, Vihiga County.

EACC officers apprehended the suspect while receiving the bribe. He was booked at Kisumu Central Police Station and released on Ksh20,000 cash bail pending further investigations.

EACC now warns the public officers against engaging in corrupt practices, as well as the public, from falling prey to fraudulent traps.

They also stressed their commitment to eradicating bribery at service delivery points to enhance access to quality services for all citizens.
