GSU Officer Involved In Fatal Shooting Of Nurse Detained For 21 Days
A court has allowed police to hold a General Service Unit (GSU) officer for another 21 days as investigations continue into the fatal shooting of a woman that occurred on August 30.
The police constable, reportedly attached to the Uasin Gishu Governor’s security detail, is accused of shooting a 45-year-old nurse at a GSU officers’ mess opposite Eldoret State Lodge.
According to preliminary police findings, the constable was armed with his assigned weapon when he arrived at the mess at about 6pm.
He then fired several rounds, killing the woman at the scene as other people at the premises sought safety.
Uasin Gishu Police Commander Wilberforce Sicharani said investigators recovered the firearm and established that about 10 bullets had been fired, with five rounds remaining in the weapon.
The suspect allegedly fled after the shooting, prompting police to launch an overnight search that led to his arrest.
“After the incident, the suspect ran away and we acted immediately, searching overnight,” Sicharani said.
“Luckily, we were able to catch him. We have determined that he used about 10 bullets, because five were found left in the gun.”
At the Eldoret Law Courts, Chief Magistrate Peter Ndwiga ruled that the officer should remain in custody at Naiberi Police Station to give investigators more time to complete their work.
The magistrate cited the suspect’s alleged flight risk as well as concerns over the safety of the public and the officer himself in extending the detention period.

“The testament is therefore to remain in police custody at Naiberi Police Station for a period of 21 days to allow the state to conclude its investigations. We will mention the matter on September 23,” the magistrate stated.
The woman’s husband has called on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to conduct a swift probe, saying the family is still coming to terms with the loss.
Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) in Uasin Gishu has also condemned the killing and called for justice for the deceased, who was a member of the union.
“We strongly condemn the incident. We do not know the circumstances under which she was killed, but we want justice for our member,” said KNUN Uasin Gishu Secretary.
The case comes amid reports of several women being killed in Uasin Gishu County in recent weeks.
This includes a 22-year-old Mount Kenya University (MKU) student whose body was discovered at her home on August 23 with severe stab wounds, while the main suspect is yet to be arrested.
