‘Ruto Wants To Traumatise Gen Z Protestors!’ – Maraga States On Terrorism Charges

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has suggested that the current increase in terrorism accusations against demonstrators is a government strategy to scare and control young people.

Speaking on Wednesday, July 16, Maraga asserted that the serious nature of the charges meant that none of the accused would be granted bail until their cases were resolved, which might take years.

In fact, he argued that by the time these cases ended, the courts would not be able to prove the allegations, but they would have undergone a lengthy stay in police custody.

Noting that the majority of these individuals were under the age of 25, Maraga argued that these charges indicated the government’s desperate attempt to control the youth.

“Most of these young people are under the age of 25. 18-year-old young people are being charged with terrorism in circumstances that, when you consider, you can’t see any terrorist act which can be proven,” he said.

“What is being done is just to create terror for the young people, their families and control, but this is not going to be allowed.”

He added: “A terrorist offence is a very serious offence, and the reason they are being charged with is so that they are denied bond, so that they are traumatised and kept in custody.”

Maraga’s words came just after eight more people were charged with terrorism in the Kahawa Law Courts.

The eight were arrested on suspicion of torching the Mawego Police Station in Homa Bay in protest over Albert Ojwang’s death.

They had been under custody orders from the Oyugis Law Court before being re-arrested on July 14, 2025.

This comes after a miscellaneous application was closed and moved to Nairobi’s Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) headquarters for further consideration.

This is the latest group to be charged with terrorism since the June protests, with the prosecution alleging that some of these activities constituted terrorism.

Just a week ago, 37 people were charged with terrorism in the same court for causing havoc that damaged Kikuyu Probation Offices, Kikuyu Law Courts, Kikuyu Sub-County Offices, and the Kikuyu Chief’s office.

Other offices that were damaged include the Kikuyu Sub-County Education Office, the Sub-County Accountant’s Office, the Registrar of Lands Office, the Dagoretti Police Post, and the Kikuyu Deputy County Commissioner’s Office.

They were charged alongside two other people, popular Gachagua associates Peter Kinyanjui Wanjiru (alias Kawanjiru) and Serah Wanjiku Thiga.
