Gov’t Pathologist Unable To Determine Julia Njoki’s Cause Of Death
Uncertainty continues to grip the family of deceased Nanyuki resident Julia Njoki Wangui, who died in detention, as postmortem results on Tuesday, July 15, were inconclusive.
Government pathologist Peter Ndegwa claimed that the post-mortem results were equivocal, requiring more samples from her body to be tested to ascertain the cause of death.
“We are finding some things in the lungs, the brain, pancreas, and liver, all of which can be contributory (to her death),” Ndegwa noted.
More importantly, the doctor noted during the first autopsy that Njoki had significant bleeding in her brain, but that it may not have been enough to cause her death.

He went on, “Specifically, there is bleeding in the brain which does not look traumatic. We want to look at the brain thoroughly to know where the bleeding was coming from.”
The doctor also informed that, while doctors performed a craniotomy on Njoki’s head, the entire report of the complicated treatment was not ready by Tuesday.
Pathologists will also examine her other crucial organs.
The pathologists have consequently sought an additional two weeks to complete a more comprehensive report based on the findings of their autopsy.
Njoki died on July 10 while on remand at Nanyuki Women’s Prison.
According to reports, the 24-year-old was slumped in prison and died after fruitless attempts to seek medical assistance.
The autopsy of Julia Kariuki has been completed, but the results were inconclusive.

Her family is now screaming unfairness, insisting that the young mother was in good health when she was arrested.
Njoki was arrested days after being caught with hundreds of other demonstrators during the Saba Saba demonstrations.

The 24-year-old’s death provoked a wave of protests in her hometown, Nanyuki, with neighbors blocking key routes on Monday, July 14, seeking answers about what happened to Njoki.
On Monday, the National Police Service tried to disassociate itself from any participation in Njoki’s death, stating that it was not under investigation, thereby denying charges of malfeasance.
“To date, no formal complaint has been recorded alleging any misconduct, whether by commission or omission.
“Nevertheless, the relevant agencies will conduct swift, transparent, and credible investigations into the matter, and accountability will follow,” said NPS.
