ODM’s Oburu Oginga Flies To UK For Treatment
Oburu Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has acknowledged that he is currently in the United Kingdom for a routine medical check-up, as advised by his doctors and party leaders.
In a statement issued on Thursday, September 10, Oburu stated that the vacation will also allow him to rest and revitalise while undergoing a full health checkup.
“I am currently in the United Kingdom (UK) to undergo a thorough, routine medical checkup,” he wrote.
“This visit follows the direct advice of both my doctors and the party leadership to ensure a comprehensive evaluation of my health, while allowing me a dedicated period of rest and rejuvenation.”
“As I attend these personal health routine checks that naturally come with advancing years, I view taking this step back as a deliberate, strategic moment for our movement,” Oburu added.

He promised ODM members and Kenyans that the party’s operations would continue uninterrupted during his absence.
He reaffirmed that the party’s leadership structures were capable of managing day-to-day operations.
The ODM leader said Deputy Party Leaders Simba Arati and Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, together with the National Central Committee and party secretariat, would oversee the party’s affairs in his absence.
He urged ODM members and officials to cooperate with the party’s leadership, remain united and stay focused on the movement’s shared national goals.
The latest development comes just eight days after Oburu was briefly admitted to Nairobi Hospital on September 1, sparking public concern over his health amid rising political temperatures.
Following reports of his hospitalisation, the Siaya Senator quickly clarified that he had only visited the facility for a general medical check-up and that he had not suffered anything serious.
“Thank you for your concerns. I have read the nation’s digital news and wish to state that I am very well,” he said.

“I had only briefly visited the hospital for a general checkup with my doctors and have since returned home.”
The ODM leader further noted that being sick is a normal human experience and should not alarm anyone, adding that the day he truly falls sick, he will openly inform Kenyans.

“The day I am truly sick, I will inform you all, for I am a very transparent person. Thanks for your concerns.”
His latest trip to the UK comes as ODM continues to hold internal consultations on its political direction.
This is particularly in relation to its collaboration with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Oburu took over as ODM party leader following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in October 2025 and has since led the party in supporting Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027.
