Kenya’s MOH Suspends Nursing Council CEO, Calls For Internal Audit

Aden Duale, the Health CS, has suspended Lister Onsongo, the CEO of the Nursing Council of Kenya.

Duale stated that the suspension is related to the suspected unlawful submission of 42 Bachelor of Science (BSc) Nursing students for internships prior to the end of their academic programs.

The CS has selected Ann Mukuna, Director of Standards and Compliance, to take over the Council’s activities until further notice.

“The Ministry of Health has uncovered a serious breach of regulations involving the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) and 10 Public and Private Universities.

“We have noted the unlawful submission of 42 Bachelor of Science (BSc) Nursing students for internship before the completion of their academic programmes,” Duale said.

“This action is in direct contravention of the Nursing Council Act and the guidelines approved by the Public Service Commission (PSC).”

The Ministry has also withdrawn all internship letters granted to the 42 students with immediate effect.

Duale stated that the concerned individuals have been promptly asked to abandon their duty stations while investigations begin.

“In line with this, the Ministry has suspended Lister Onsongo, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nursing Council of Kenya, pending the outcome of a comprehensive internal audit of the full cohort of 2,098 BSc Nursing interns,” he said.

The Ministry stated that it is committed to ensuring the integrity of healthcare training and deployment.

Duale stated that all people found complicit, whether in the Ministry of Health, the NCK, or in the leadership of the implicated universities, will be held totally accountable.

The health CS stated that the problem is being handled with utmost urgency in order to defend professional standards, enforce legislative compliance, and protect the rights of nursing graduates and the general public.
