Raila Assures Ruto Of Full Support Until 2027

Raila Odinga, the head of the ODM, has made a startling announcement: he has pledged to back President William Ruto for the balance of his tenure, which runs until 2027.

However, he was eager to underline that this support comes with a caveat: no conversations about the 2027 succession battle unless the administration delivers on its core promises.

In an interview with NTV on Sunday at his Karen home, Odinga underlined that the ongoing political partnership with President William Ruto’s administration was a temporary solution to stabilize the country rather than a long-term political union.

“We have said that we are in the broad-based government until 2027. We did not say that we are going to work with UDA beyond 2027,” Raila said.

“Those are issues that we will discuss at the appropriate time, and the decision will be made by party members, not Raila Odinga alone.”

Odinga stated that the choice to collaborate with the government was motivated by the desire to prevent national anarchy following last year’s deadly youth-led protests against governance, economic problems, and police brutality.

He disclosed that the country was on the verge of a full-fledged crisis, and that without assistance, things could have gotten far worse.

“In 2023, we were in the streets raising very concrete issues about electoral justice, cost of living and corruption,” he said.

“The government responded with brutality, and we lost about 70 people. When we tried to honour them, no judge allowed us to hold a memorial. We eventually did it quietly.”
