ODM Responds To Governor Orengo’s Resignation Rumours

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has denied that Siaya Governor James Orengo has resigned, after days of speculation regarding his position as county boss.

On Monday morning, a message appeared on social media claiming that the governor had resigned through a formal letter submitted to the Speaker of the Siaya County Assembly.

However, ODM denounced the paper as a fake, encouraging the public to disregard it.

“We can authoritatively state that the letter below is fake. Ignore it and focus,” the party said in a brief statement.

The letter, dated August 4, 2025, stated that Orengo had resigned with immediate effect, citing personal health issues that demanded his full and urgent attention.

It further said that the choice was made after consulting with family members and medical specialists.

According to the document, Orengo thanked the people of Siaya, elected officials, and county staff for their support, describing the post as the highest honour of his public life.

The letter was signed and copied to numerous high officials, including the Deputy Governor, County Secretary, Clerk of the Assembly, Chairperson of the Council of Governors, and Raila Odinga, the leader of the ODM party.

Meanwhile, Siaya could be facing a leadership crisis as Orengo and his deputy, William Oduol, face rising criticism over their alleged extended absence from office.

A concerned individual had initially petitioned top government institutions, accusing the county’s two highest-ranking executives of failing to fulfill their constitutional obligations and, as a result, paralyzing critical county activities.

The petitioner, Julius Oluoch, stated that Orengo had been conspicuously absent from public view for more than a month, causing severe delays, including the necessary approval of Siaya’s 2025/2026 budget.

This has been exacerbated by the difficult relationship between Orengo and Oduol, with the deputy governor claiming he has been intentionally excluded from official duties.

However, Orengo has remained silent regarding his whereabouts, with major county activities presided over by Assembly Speaker George Okode.

Last week, Colonel (retired) Cyrus Oguna, the County Chief of Staff, hosted a national government delegation led by Defence PS Patrick Mariru and his Medical Services counterpart, Ouma Oluga.

They discussed significant development projects being implemented by the military in the country.
