New Details Emerge From The AMREF Aircraft Crash

Following an airplane crash in the Mwihoko region of Githurai 45, Kiambu County, it has been confirmed that the light aircraft belonged to the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) Flying Doctors.

According to the medical organisation, the Cessna Citation XLS had just taken off from Wilson Airport at 2:17 p.m. and was on its way to Hargeisa, Somalia, when it crashed.

According to reports, the collision killed two persons on the spot, while two others suffered grave injuries and are presently receiving medical attention.

While the corpses of the deceased have already been found, AMREF has stated that investigations are still ongoing to determine the actual cause of the catastrophe.

“At this time, we are cooperating fully with relevant aviation authorities and emergency response teams to establish the facts surrounding the situation,” AMREF stated.

“Our immediate focus is on the safety and well-being of those on board and providing full support to their families and colleagues,” the organisation added.

“We are also offering all necessary assistance to the authorities as investigations continue.”

In a statement issued Thursday evening, AMREF urged members of the public to be patient and understanding as the relevant authorities address the situation with care and accuracy.

Amateur videos and photographs widely posted on the internet showed security officials, including police and military officers, assisting with rescue operations while people watched from a distance.

Eyewitnesses told the press that they observed the aircraft flying low before it crashed with a bang and exploded into flames.

“We heard a loud bang and immediately rushed to the scene. The aircraft was already on fire, and some bodies could be seen,” said a resident of Githurai.

Meanwhile, police have roped off the area to allow for additional investigations, and neighbors are cautioned not to approach the scene without authorization.

Crashes involving light aircraft are quite common in Kenya, with the latest occurrence adding to the total number of air transport incidents reported since the start of the year.
