DIG Lagat Makes Surprise Visits To Kitui, Machakos Police Stations
On Thursday, August 14, Eliud Lagat, Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service (DIG-KPS), paid a surprise visit to the Mwingi and Matuu Police Stations in Kitui and Machakos counties, respectively.
According to an official statement from the National Police Service, the DIG was touring to evaluate the working conditions of officers in several districts when he stopped at the police stations.
During the visit, Lagat praised the cops’ hard work, professionalism, and dedication to public service.
Lagat inspected major sections of the stations, including the Report Office, Children and Gender Office, Cells, Anti-Crime Unit, DCI Offices, Traffic Office, and Police Lines, where he interacted directly with personnel on duty.
The visit to the stations occurs at a time when the DIG is under intense scrutiny following the death of teacher and social media celebrity Albert Ojwang.

On June 7, Ojwang was murdered while in jail at Nairobi’s Central Police Station.
The DIG was named in Ojwang’s case when the blogger allegedly posted defamatory content about him on social media, prompting Lagat to submit a legal complaint against him.
Following the complaint, Ojwang was arrested and eventually died in police custody under strange circumstances.
However, Lagat denied any involvement in the arrest, torture, or murder.
Although he resigned from his position to allow for additional investigations, civil society, rights groups, and other leaders demanded his arrest.

Police stations have recently been in the spotlight, particularly following occurrences of custody killings. Kenyans organized protests, with some being burned in response.
