Ex-IEBC Official Arrested For Forging Academic Documents

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has detained a former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) official on charges of faking academic documents.

On Friday morning, EACC said that it had detained the employee who allegedly falsified paperwork in order to advance inside the Commission.

The Commission was informed that the officer presented a fake Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies and Public Administration certificate, reportedly awarded by Moi University.

EACC detectives quickly launched an investigation, and it was discovered that the document was fabricated and that the suspect knowingly presented it as authentic.

After completing its investigations, the Commission referred the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who agreed with the proposal to initiate criminal proceedings against the suspect.

The defendant was apprehended by EACC investigators on Wednesday, November 19, and arraigned on Thursday, November 20, on multiple charges.

He was charged with forgery under Sections 345 and 349 of the Penal Code, uttering a fake document in violation of Section 353 of the Penal Code, and deceiving a principal.

The defendant disputed the accusations in front of the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court and was released on a cash bail of Ksh200,000 or an alternative bond of Ksh500,000 with one guarantee of the same amount.

While cautioning Kenyans against fabricating academic certificates, the anti-graft commission reaffirms its commitment to combating fraud and maintaining public integrity.

The officer’s arrest is part of the Commission’s concerted efforts to combat the growing number of incidents of government personnel falsifying academic documents to obtain positions.

Just a fortnight ago, EACC officers detained a Nairobi City water official for allegedly using a counterfeit Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate to gain employment and fraudulently obtain public monies totaling Ksh6.2 million.

The Nairobi city employee was seized after the Commission received reports that he had fabricated a KCSE credential in order to work as an ICT Assistant for Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC).
