Gachagua Blasts IG Kanja for Negligence After Police Disrupt DCP Campaigns

Rigathi Gachagua, leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), has accused Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja of enabling violence against his supporters in Narok on November 24.

Gachagua requested Kanja’s resignation if he is unable to carry out his duties diligently.

In a letter dated Tuesday, November 25, Gachagua stated that President William Ruto had deployed state-sponsored militias.

He said that uniformed police officers and plain-clothes units were dispatched to disrupt his campaign operations for the DCP candidate in Narok Town Ward, Douglas Masikonde.

He claimed that IG Kanja directed police personnel to block all roadways into and out of Narok Town, as well as use live bullets and throw tear gas at the mob.

Furthermore, the DCP leader said that two police officers assigned to Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina were dispatched to Narok, where they allegedly received instructions from senior officials.

The former Deputy President attributed the same officers to prior acts of violence in Murang’a County and Makuyu.

“Mr. Kanja, it seems you have surrendered the National Police command to Betty Maina; this, you cannot deny,” he stated.

“You have clearly demonstrated through your inaction that violence is under your police command.”

Gachagua cautioned ahead of the November 27 by-elections that any further violence would jeopardize the electoral process.

He urged urgent action over the Narok incident, including the removal of the two cops assigned to MP Betty Maina over neutrality failure.

“Mr Kanja, please wake up and work. Ahead of the November 27th by-elections in the electoral areas gazetted by the IEBC, any violence will hang on your neck,” said Gachagua.

The DCP leader advised Kanja to “do the honorable thing and resign” if he is not in full control of the police service.
