On Friday, suspected bandits killed at least seven people and stole hundreds of animals across Meru.

According to Meru County Peace and Herders Chairman Charles Kamwibua, two persons were slain in the Igembe region, while another five were killed in Ngaremara, Isiolo County, as herders attempted to reclaim stolen sheep.

Over 400 sheep were stolen in Igembe, and over 200 in Tigania, prior to another raid in the evening in Maili Saba, Buuri constituency.

Two other peasants were killed in Kuria, Migori County, during a banditry raid. The attackers fled with four goats.

The two deaths bring the total number of individuals slain in the area extending to Angata Barrikoi to six in just one week.

Police said more individuals had been dispatched to the scene to deal with the developing commotion.

The most recent instance occurred in Kehancha, where one Sampson Ngera, 52, was shot in the chest and left leg before being left to die.

Police claimed the motivation was unknown, but they suspected he was targeted by cattle rustling gangs operating in the region.

His remains were sent to the mortuary pending further procedures.

Meru is one of the areas targeted by Operation Maliza Uhalifu, which is aimed at combating bandits.

Despite perseverance, the program has successfully contained crime in the area and surrounding counties.
