Ruku Laughs Off Gachagua’s ‘Kingship’ After Mbeere North UDA Victory
Geoffrey Ruku, Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, criticized opposition leader Rigathi Gachagua after the Mbeere North parliamentary by-election loss, portraying the outcome as a rejection of divisive politics.
Ruku argued the outcome conveyed a clear message that Kenyans are no longer willing to support leaders who feed on regional differences and self-proclaimed political titles.
The CS spoke on Saturday at Suneka Catholic Parish in Bonchari, Kisii County, during a communal fellowship organized by the Catholic MPs’ Spiritual Support Initiative.
“Gachagua has been chest-thumping and installing himself as the Mt Kenya kingpin, but the people have spoken loudly,” Ruku told the congregation.
“His kingship is self-made and unsupported. Mbeere North proved that.”

In the November 27 by-election for Mbeere North, UDA’s Leonard Wa Muthende won with 15,802 votes.
His closest contender was DP’s Newton Kariuki (Karish), who received 15,308 votes, giving Muthende a 494-vote margin.
The outcome of the vote gave UDA the parliamentary seat in what turned out to be a close race between the ruling party and the United Opposition.

The Mbeere North by-election was one of the seven most widely followed fights among the 22 mini-polls, along with Malava, Kasipul, Magarini, Banissa, Ugunja, and the Baringo senate seat.
Ruku emphasized that the election was more than just a race between candidates, casting it as a test of leadership values, with voters choosing unity over conflict.
“The politics of hatred and division are behind us. Kenya is one nation, and nobody—absolutely nobody—will succeed in dividing it,” he said.
