Gates Foundation Warns of Rising Global Child Death Rates

According to the Gates Foundation’s 2025 Goalkeepers Report, the number of children dying before the age of five is expected to climb for the first time in 25 years, reversing decades of improvement.

According to the report, 4.6 million children under the age of five died worldwide in 2024, with the figure expected to rise by more than 200,000 in 2025 to about 4.8 million.

The surge coincides with steep cuts in global health financing, which plummeted roughly 27% this year, as well as rising state indebtedness and unstable health systems.

Community health workers, such as Josephine Barasa, have determined to continue providing critical care and education despite funding constraints.

The research also warned that if funding deficits continue, up to 16 million more children may die by 2045.

Bill Gates described the current situation as a vital turning point.

He also stated that with the correct priorities and investments today, the world can avert a significant reversal in child survival and ensure that millions more children are alive by 2045.

The research identifies cost-effective measures, such as solid primary health care, immunizations, and next-generation breakthroughs, as tools capable of saving millions of young lives.

Experts also warn that reversing these accomplishments would be a tragedy for children, as well as a threat to broader social and economic growth.
