Uhuru Kenyatta Issues Statement On Rwanda-DRC Washington Peace Agreement

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has hailed the signing of the Washington Accords for Peace between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Uhuru called it a historic breakthrough that ushers in a new era of regional stability and shared prosperity.

Kenyatta was among the leaders who witnessed Presidents Paul Kagame and Félix Tshisekedi sign a historic agreement at the Donald J. Trump United States Institute of Peace in Washington.

The Accords create a lasting cease-fire, detail the disarmament of armed groups, ensure the safe return of refugees, and lay the groundwork for economic unification.

In applauding the deal, he stated that the Washington Accords build on years of dedicated regional diplomacy, including the Nairobi and Luanda peace tracks that he helped orchestrate.

“The Washington Accords signed by Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame and President FelixTshisekedi ends decades of conflict in the region by establishing a permanent ceasefire, the disarmament of rebel groups, provisions for refugees to return home, and a new framework for economic prosperity, addressing one of the world’s deadliest conflicts, which has claimed more than 10 million lives,” Kenyatta said in a statement on Friday.

He praised Presidents Kagame and Tshisekedi for their vision and fortitude in pursuing a new path of discussion, trust, and cooperation.

The former president also acknowledged the contribution of President Donald Trump and the United States in advancing the peace endeavor and creating a forum for this historic event.

He emphasized that the accord restores hope to millions of conflict-affected people and provides an unparalleled chance for the Great Lakes region to pursue peace, security, and economic transformation.

“The Washington peace deal now paves the way for renewed cooperation between Rwanda and the DRC, giving millions hope for lasting peace after decades of conflict,” he said.
