CYRUS JIRONGO: Climax Bus Driver Speaks Following Fatal Crash That Killed Former MP
The driver of the Climax Coach bus involved in the deadly road accident that killed former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo has offered an account of the events leading up to the crash, claiming he was confronted with an impossible decision on the road.
On Saturday, December 13, 2025, an accident happened along the Nakuru-Naivasha Highway.
Kamau Githinji, an eight-year Climax Coach driver, said the collision occurred early in the morning while going from Nairobi to Busia with 65 passengers on board.
“I was coming from Nairobi heading to Busia,” Githinji said. “Early in the morning, there was an accident between my bus and a Mercedes-Benz.”
According to Githinji, the Mercedes-Benz approached the roadway from a gas station and failed to yield.
“Usiku ya leo ilitokea accident. Mercedes ilikuwa inatoka kwa mafuta petrol station na mimi natoka Nairobi nikienda Busia. Mercedes hakugive way,” he recalled.

What happened next, Githinji claimed, was a head-on collision that he couldn’t avert without endangering the lives of scores of passengers on his bus.
“Aliingia kwa barabara na akaona pande yake gari zimeweka jam akaamua kukuja penye niko tukakutana kichwa na kichwa na yeye,” he said.
“The car had only one person, the driver, while my bus had 65 passengers.”
Githinji stated that he briefly considered swerving to escape the collision, but realized that doing so would have caused the bus to flip.
“Wakati nilijaribu kuokoa nukasikia gari yangu inaweza enda chini sasa mimi nikakanyaga akakuja kama ameniingia (I had opted to swerve, but that would have turned tragic on my end, so I continued on my lane, and he came straight at me),” he said.

Githinji stated that he first learnt the identification of the man driving the Mercedes-Benz after the police arrived on the scene.
“I didn’t know the Mercedes-Benz driver was Cyrus Jirongo until the police came,” he said.
Githinji expressed condolences to Jirongo’s family, saying, “My condolences.”
Jirongo, a former Lugari MP and significant political figure, suffered serious head injuries and died on the scene, according to police.
His passing has sparked an outpouring of condolences from political leaders, trade unionists, and ordinary citizens.
