United States Suspends Green Card Lottery Over Insecurity
Following a shooting event at Brown University, US President Donald Trump has announced that the green card lottery program will be suspended immediately.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem revealed on Thursday, December 18, that Trump had directed the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services to halt the program.
The suspension comes after a shooting event at Brown University, where a gunman opened fire inside a classroom, killing two undergraduate students.
According to the U.S. government, the alleged gunman entered the country through the diversity lottery immigrant visa program in 2017 and was awarded a green card.
“At President Trump’s direction, I am immediately directing USCIS to pause the DV1 program to ensure no more Americans are harmed by this disastrous programme,” said Noem.

In 2017, President Trump…
The Homeland Security chief revealed that President Trump has always opposed the diversity visa lottery, claiming that such programs violate US immigration policy.
“In 2017, President Trump fought to end this programme, following the devastating NYC truck ramming by an ISIS terrorist, who entered under the DV1 programme and murdered eight people,” she added.
Meanwhile, the alleged Portuguese shooter who killed two undergraduate students on December 13 also shot and killed a university professor, injuring nine others.

The current development comes as a severe blow to many countries, including Kenya, which has long profited from the program, allowing numerous Kenyans to travel to the United States.
The Diversity Immigrant Visa, commonly referred to as the green card visa lottery, is a U.S government initiative which grants foreigners the permit to enter America at a low rate.
Winners of the lottery are always selected randomly through a computer programme, which uniquely permits people to go abroad to learn or acquire better jobs.
