KDF Brigadier Appointed To Lead Multinational Peace Forces

Brigadier Joseph Douglas Mokwena of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has become the first Kenyan Flag Officer to oversee Sector West of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).

Brigadier Mokwena was previously stationed at the Sector West Headquarters in Bouar, where he commanded troops from Bangladesh, Tanzania, and Cameroon.

He also commanded the Peru Engineering Company and Senegal’s Quick Reaction Force, as well as speciality groups like Bangladesh’s Medical Level II Hospital and Aviation Detachment.

Prior to entering office, he paid a visit to the MINUSCA Force Commander, Lt Gen Humphrey Nyone of Zambia, at the Force Headquarters in Bangui, CAR.

He went on a familiarization tour to learn more about the Mission and sector he currently commands.

Previously, Sector West command was alternated among officers from other countries, notably Serbia and Burkina Faso.

Kenya’s engagement had previously been confined to Military Observers and Staff Officers; therefore, Brigadier Mokwena’s command represents a significant advancement for the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

The United Nations and MINUSCA leadership expressed gratitude for Kenya’s support.

They emphasized how such engagement improves MINUSCA’s impartiality, efficacy, and representation of global peacekeeping values.

The Kenyan Senior Officer working in MINUSCA represented Kenya’s continuous role as an advocate for peace and stability in Africa and around the world.

“The presence of a Kenyan Senior Officer at MINUSCA carries the aspiration of a Nation that has consistently championed peace and stability across the African continent and beyond,” KDF stated.

Kenyan troops saw his leadership as a source of pride and professional development.

It marked a shift from support roles to leading multinational forces.

This offers them the chance to gain experience managing diverse contingents and coordinating complex UN mandates such as civilian protection and disarmament.

Kenya’s senior leadership role in MINUSCA not only brought valuable operational diversity to the Mission but also reinforced the nation’s growing involvement in continental and global peacekeeping.
