“Jirongo’s Death Hit Me Like a Missile!” – Wetang’ula Says

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula called former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo’s death a very personal loss, saying the news came as a devastating shock.

Wetang’ula described how he learned of his friend’s death early in the morning while preparing to go.

Wetang’ula, speaking during Jirongo’s funeral, said the news stunned him, highlighting their strong bond.

“In the morning, when I woke up at around 7 am to travel to Mombasa, my son came and told me sorry for my friend Jirongo. He informed me that Jirongo had passed on following an accident,” he said.

“It hit me like a thunderbolt, it hit me like a missile, because Jirongo was personal to me. He was my friend.”

The Speaker stated that he and Jirongo had worked closely together over the years and supported each other, describing the late former MP as a man who valued friendships.

“We have worked together and helped each other, and I can tell you he was a man who valued and respected friends. He had time for everyone.”

Jirongo was laid to rest in his Lumakanda house, with representatives from all political parties paying respect to his legacy as a seasoned politician, businessman, and regional unifier.

He advocated for a comprehensive, open, and credible investigation into Jirongo’s killing.

Wetang’ula stated that it was critical for investigators to fully explain both the procedure and findings of the investigation in order to alleviate public worry and eliminate any remaining concerns.

“I amplified calls by fellow leaders pushing for a thorough, open and credible investigation into the circumstances surrounding his untimely death,” Wetang’ula said.

“As leaders present here, it is only right that we demand clear answers on the death of the former Lugari MP.”

Wetang’ula encouraged detectives to act quickly and properly to find out the truth, put an end to conjecture, and provide peace to Jirongo’s family, colleagues, and fans.

He also stated that Jirongo’s death was an important lesson for the region, adding that the former legislator had persistently advocated for unity within the Luhya community during his political career.

“A key lesson from his passing is the urgent need for unity within the Luhya community, a cause he passionately stood for,” Wetang’ula said.

The burial was attended by several leaders, including former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and Co-operatives and MSMEs Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya.

While governors were led by Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, opposition leader Martha Karua, as well as Members of Parliament and county assembly members.
