Uganda Police Respond To Bobi Wine’s Arrest Claims, Vow Calm Elections

The Uganda Police Force (UPF) has denied allegations of a plot to arrest and imprison National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, before election day.

UPF declared in a statement released through X on Friday, January 2, 2026, that the allegations are false and offensive.

“The Uganda Police Force categorically dismisses allegations of a scheme to detain candidate Kyagulanyi Sentamu or engineer incidents before election day,” UPF stated.

“These assertions are unfounded and provocative.”

The Ugandan police added that they have been providing security for Bobi Wine throughout his campaign efforts to ensure his safety.

The police also stated that all apprehensions follow stringent legal rules, with inmates receiving thorough processing in accordance with the law.

“UPF provides security for the NUP candidate throughout his campaign activities, ensuring his safety,” the statement read.

“Our effort is geared to facilitate tranquil elections, and we call on every political actor to promote non-violence.”

Adding, “All apprehensions occur strictly in line with legal guidelines, with detainees processed in full compliance with the law.”

Bobi Wine had expressed concern about what he claims is a coordinated attempt by the state to arrest him ahead of election day.

He cautioned that the action is intended to legitimize widespread arrests, bloodshed, and the deployment of military personnel throughout the country.

In a statement posted on X on Friday, January 2, 2026, the NUP leader stated that the plan is similar to previous election-related violence and is meant to terrify supporters and crush dissent.

“I’ve learnt from security circles of a plot by the desperate regime to have me arrested before polling day to create a pre-emptive massacre akin to what they did in November 2020,” he wrote.

He stated that such an arrest would not be isolated, but rather part of a larger operation aimed at clearing the way for mass arrests and enforced disappearances across the country, all under the guise of restoring order.

Uganda is scheduled to head to the ballot on Thursday, January 15, 2026, to elect the President and the Parliament.

The incumbent President Yoweri Museveni is seeking another term in the upcoming polls.
