Venezuela’s Military Recognises Maduro’s Vice President As Acting President

Venezuela’s military acknowledged Delcy Rodriguez, Nicolas Maduro’s deputy, as the country’s interim leader on Sunday, after US soldiers detained the former president and brought him to trial.

In the midst of uncertainty following the dramatic capture of the socialist president, Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez appeared to support Rodriguez.

However, US President Donald Trump had previously indicated that she was a figure with whom Washington might cooperate.

Padrino gave a statement on television supporting a Supreme Court decision that installed Rodriguez as interim president for 90 days.

He also urged Venezuelans to resume their normal lives, addressing less than two days after US strikes jolted the capital, Caracas and special forces apprehended Maduro and his wife.

Padrino called it a “cowardly kidnapping” and said that some of Maduro’s bodyguards, as well as Venezuelan military officers and citizens, were executed “in cold blood.”

Venezuelan officials have yet to provide an official toll for those injured or killed in the US operations.

The streets of Caracas were desolate and calm on Sunday, with many businesses closed and moderate lines at several shops and pharmacies.

“I call on the people of Venezuela to resume their activities of all kinds, economic, work and education, in the coming days. The homeland must follow its constitutional course,” Padrino said.
