Jeremiah Kioni Calls Out Gachagua Over ‘Retrogressive’ Mt Kenya Politics
Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni has slammed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for remarks he made at a burial yesterday, implying that Mt Kenya would one day have a single dominant party.
Kioni said in an interview with Spice FM on Thursday, January 8, that Gachagua’s alleged remarks were not only retrogressive but also unconstitutional.
“I heard someone saying that in this region, we will only have one party. That is a very retrogressive statement,” the Jubilee party principal commented.
While attacking the leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), Kioni stressed the need to preserve Kenya’s multi-party democracy, claiming that Gachagua’s words were inappropriate.
“It is not a statement you should make, even if you want to achieve it. It is against the Constitution. If he had said it when I was there, I could have contradicted him,” he added.
Jeremiah Kioni: I don’t understand how the opposition, once a loud platform of hope for Kenyans, is now branded tribalist. Kenyans reject that label. Kioni also warned that such words from Gachagua could have far-reaching ramifications for the united opposition and cause misconceptions among members.
He went on to say that if the leaders continued to make such remarks, he would leave the opposition camp, citing the risk to Kenya’s democracy.
“We fought for this Constitution, and it is because of this pluralism that we can challenge each other,” Kioni reiterated.
“Because I am going to run in 2027, you are not going to sacrifice my political career on statements you continue saying.”
“I will leave you and follow my own path, and meet during the elections,” he stated.

During the interview, Kioni also commented on the rising tensions inside the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), citing a scheme by some ODM members to ‘auction’ the party.

In his statements, he compared ODM’s current issues to those encountered by Jubilee two years ago, suggesting that there were previous plots to sell the Jubilee party.
“ODM is on sale, and they are currently trying to implicate former President Uhuru Kenyatta. But ODM members must fight for the soul of the party and fight for the spirit of Raila,” Kioni noted.
