IEBC Requests Ksh.63B For 2027 General Election, Budgets Ksh.1.1B For Meals

Members of Parliament have criticised the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for presenting an expensive 2027 election budget.

The parliamentarians were taken aback by a request for more than Ksh.1 billion in meals alone, describing it as a costly election. The IEBC has estimated that the 2027 General Election will cost Ksh.63.9 billion.

The IEBC presented the 2027 general election budget to the National Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, revealing disturbing data.

The IEBC requested that the Parliamentary committee authorize Ksh.1.1 billion for meals on election day.

The IEBC did not, however, specify the types of meals it will provide to its poll officials, which would account for the astonishing sum.

Aside from printing ballot papers at a cost of Ksh.5.9 billion, MPs questioned a cost line for transportation, which the budget estimated would cost Ksh.3 billion, and another Ksh.4.9 billion for election materials logistics.

The IEBC informed MPs that it required Ksh.1 billion for results transmission, Ksh.3.9 billion for system upgrades, and Ksh.6.2 billion to replace KIEMS kits.

On election day, the IEBC claims it will cost Ksh.776 million to hire tents and sound systems for various polling stations and centers.

Ksh.560 million has been allocated for party primaries, while Ksh.500 million is to be used to audit the voter register. IEBC has also planned to spend Ksh.305 million for bulk SMS.

The electoral body told MPs to approve the budget to enable the commission to deliver a smooth general election.
