SHA Announces New Package For Cancer Patients Amidst Public Outcry

Cancer Patients across the country are set to breathe a sigh of relief following months of public outcry over treatment costs.

This came after the government increased the oncology treatment package under the Social Health Authority (SHA) by Ksh250,000.

In a statement on Monday, March 16, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo announced that the package has been upgraded from Ksh550,000 to Ksh800,000 per patient.

Under SHA, the oncology package covers diagnosis, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, brachytherapy, surgical interventions,  palliative care, consumables, and specialised imaging like PET/CT scans and MRIs at contracted facilities.

The PS is optimistic that the move to reinforce the package will ease the financial burden that families and patients often endure while seeking cancer treatment across the country.

“The Government remains committed to expanding access to cancer care across the country through both progressive policy and strategic health infrastructure,” SHA stated.

“In line with this commitment, SHA has enhanced the oncology benefits package from Ksh550,000 to Ksh800,000 per patient, significantly easing the financial burden of treatment for many Kenyan families,” it added.

In addition to this, the government is also keen to establish more specialised facilities that will offer specialised cancer services closer to Kenyans, especially in marginalised areas.

PS Omollo confirmed that the construction of the Kisii Cancer Centre is 30 per cent complete and, once finished, it is expected to serve communities in the South Nyanza region.

The project is currently at about 30 per cent completion, with works progressing on the third floor, expected to run through mid-April,” Omollo stated.

“Construction of the Chemotherapy Centre block is scheduled to commence next week.”

The announcement comes days after SHA’s CEO Mercy Mwangangi announced the disbursement of Ksh11.1 billion toward settling approved SHIF claims.

The payments to healthcare facilities beginning Friday, March 13, are expected to be fully processed by Thursday, March 19.
