Mass Grave Discovered In Kericho As Police Launch Investigations

Police have launched investigations after the discovery of suspected mass grates at Makaburini Cemetery in Kericho County.

In a statement released early on Sunday, March 22, the National Police Service confirmed that officers had already secured the cemetery after reports of multiple bodies allegedly buried under suspicious circumstances.

Following the alleged discovery of a mass grave within the Makaburini Cemetery in Kericho County, and in line with our mandate, officers from the National Police Service in Kericho promptly visited and secured the scene to preserve the integrity of potential evidence,” a statement from NPS read.

The first initial case came to light on Saturday, when two grave diggers working at the cemetery discovered the graves, before reporting the matter to Kericho Police Station.

This prompted an immediate response from authorities.

According to their statements, the grave diggers said a group of unidentified individuals had approached the cemetery caretaker earlier in the week and held discussions before leaving.

The interaction, they noted, appeared unusual.

The following morning, the same individuals returned in a vehicle and instructed the workers to dig a large grave within the cemetery grounds.

The workers believed it was a routine burial arrangement and complied.

However, suspicions were raised when, according to witnesses, several bodies were later brought to the site and buried in a single grave, with the grave diggers claiming the bodies were transported in bags.

Police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga has since confirmed that some witnesses have already recorded statements and investigators are working to identify and question additional persons.

Preliminary reports indicate that the number of bodies buried in the mass grave could be as many as 14.

Despite the chilling accounts, the NPS has cautioned that the claims remain unverified, emphasizing that investigations are still at a preliminary stage.

Officers are currently working to establish the accuracy of the reports.
