TWO Al-Shabaab Terrorists Killed, 4 Injured After SOG’s Operation
The Special Operations Group (SOG) officers killed two suspected Al Shabaab Terrorists and injured several others who were part of a group that was trying to infiltrate the Kenyan border last weekend.
In a statement on Tuesday, March 25, the Counter Terrorism Police Unit confirmed that the operation took place on the outskirts of Sorira, Mandera County, just before Eid al-Fitr celebrations on Friday, March 20.
According to the police, SOG officers received intelligence about a planned infiltration through intelligence and were able to track the insurgents with the help of aerial assets.
“As Kenyans were engaged in Eid celebrations, our brave and resilient SOG officers undertook an intelligence-led operation against terrorists who attempted to infiltrate the Kenya border,” the statement read.
“SOG officers laid an ambush for a group of terrorists on the outskirts of Sarira, Mandera. The officers backed by intelligence aerial assets waited for radical elements,” it added.
The officers reportedly ambushed the individuals, effectively eliminating two and injuring four others. The rest of the group fled to Somalia under heavy firepower.
The announcement comes at a time when security agencies across the country have intensified patrols, enhanced checkpoints, and heightened surveillance in key areas considered high-risk targets.
Just a month ago, officers from the Counter Terrorism Policing Unit disrupted a planned terror attack within Nairobi, allegedly linked to suspected Al-Shabaab Militants.
In a statement on Wednesday, February 18, the officers said that the intervention followed close monitoring as investigators tracked their movements, communications, and logistical networks of the terrorists.
Following the operation, the officers managed to recover several weapons, including assault rifles, pistols, and explosive devices that were intended for use in an attack within the country’s capital.
Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects were allegedly plotting to attack during Ramadan, a period observed by Muslims worldwide through prayer and fasting.
“Plans by the terrorist group Al-Shabaab to kill many Kenyans in Nairobi have once again been foiled by the intelligence agency,” a statement from the Counter Terrorism unit read.
