ODM Governor Threatens To Quit Party, Join Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi
Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku has threatened to quit the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and lead his supporters to the Linda Mwananchi movement.
Lenku said he will make the move if ODM fails to apologise over its alleged support for candidates aligned to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Lenku said ODM’s continued cooperation with politicians who are not members of the party amounted to a betrayal of its supporters in Kajiado, warning that the party risks losing its foothold in the county.
“ODM will close shop in Kajiado county. We are the people who brought ODM here, made it respected,” Lenku said.
He said the party had built its support in Kajiado through the efforts of local leaders and supporters who remained loyal to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
“We are, however, ready to leave it if the party continues to betray us,” Lenku said.
The governor demanded an apology from the ODM leadership for allowing party officials to campaign for politicians seeking elective positions on UDA-aligned platforms.
“We want the ODM leadership to apologise for campaigning for politicians who are not party members,” he said.
Lenku warned that ODM could suffer the same fate as UDA in Kajiado after several MCAs elected on the ruling party’s ticket recently defected to the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
“The same way UDA MCAs went to DCP, we will also leave to Linda Mwananchi,” he said.
He said ODM’s current strength in Kajiado was built by local supporters who took over the party when it was struggling to establish itself in the county.

“ODM we found it weak and because we respected the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, we made it strong in Kajiado,” Lenku said.
His remarks come against the backdrop of intensified political realignments in Kajiado ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Rival political formations are seeking to expand their grassroots networks and attract elected leaders.
Gachagua has in recent weeks stepped up his mobilisation activities in the county, seeking to position DCP as a major political force ahead of the 2027 elections.
The former Deputy President recently received 10 Kajiado MCAs and an aspirant into DCP, with the new entrants drawn from both UDA and ODM.
The move was presented by Gachagua as evidence of growing support for his party at the grassroots, particularly among elected leaders seeking an alternative political platform ahead of the next General Election.
