Fatal Boat Accident Prompts Governor To Order For ALL Passenger Boats’ Inspection
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir has ordered immediate and rigorous inspections of all vessels ferrying members of the public along the Coast in a fresh push to strengthen maritime safety.
The directive follows a leisure boat accident in Tudor Creek on Saturday evening in which a vessel capsized after encountering strong waves.
Five people were rescued following the accident, while two adults who had initially been reported missing were found dead near Nyali Beach on Sunday.
“I have engaged the Kenya Maritime Authority to undertake immediate and rigorous inspections of the seaworthiness of all vessels ferrying members of the public along our coastline,” Nassir Said.
The inspections will focus on the condition of vessels, routine maintenance, safety equipment and whether operators are following requirements designed to protect passengers travelling along the coastline.
Nassir also directed operators to monitor weather advisories before setting out to sea and ensure every passenger wears a life jacket throughout the journey.
The directive comes as parts of the Coast experience rainfall, with flooding concerns reported in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Several videos circulating online have also shown scenes of waterlogged areas along the Coast, although specific locations in the footage could not be independently verified.
Mombasa County remains under close watch because of its known flood-prone settlements, with authorities warning residents in vulnerable areas that evacuations could be necessary if rainfall intensifies.
Kilifi, Kwale and Lamu are also among the Coast counties expected to receive rainfall, while Tana River remains a concern because floodwater can move downstream from the highlands.
The governor visited Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital following the incident and condoled with the families of the two people who lost their lives.
“The current El Niño phenomenon is more severe than those previously experienced, and the public must exercise exceptional caution when undertaking any activity at sea,” Nassir said.
He urged boat operators to observe maritime safety requirements strictly, routinely service their vessels and take weather conditions into account before carrying passengers.
