'Gachagua Assaulted Itumbi' - Ichung'wah Reveals DP's Abrasive Attitude

MP Ichung’wah Calls On IG Kanja To Act On ‘Planned Violence’s By Gachagua Faction

The National Assembly Majority Leader, Kimani Ichung’wah, has written an explosive letter to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja.

Ichung’wah raised alarm over what he terms a coordinated campaign of incitement and planned violence allegedly linked to Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua ahead of a scheduled political rally in Kikuyu Town.

In the letter dated April 10, Ichung’wah has accused Gachagua of engaging in a deliberate pattern of hate speech and incitement targeting residents of Kikuyu Constituency, saying the developments risk undermining peace and security in the area.

The Kikuyu MP further alleged that the former Deputy President has escalated his political messaging by involving a vernacular radio presenter in what he describes as a sustained campaign of ethnic hostility and mobilisation of public sentiment.

“The last two weeks have seen Rigathi Gachagua embark on a deliberate campaign of incitement, hate, and violence targeting the people of the Kikuyu Constituency, with the aim of creating disharmony amongst my constituents,” the letter read in part.

Adding that, “I have consistently stated, as a peace-loving and law-abiding Kenyan, that Kikuyu is part and parcel of Kenya and that all leaders are welcome here.

However, as the elected representative of this constituency, I am obligated to ensure the safety of lives, property, and peace of Kikuyu residents. That obligation compels me to write to you today.”

As such, the lawmaker has asked the IG not to order the withdrawal of any police officers from the planned rally over what he claimed are systematic attempts by Gachagua to cause mayhem with the absence of officers.

“Do not fall into this trap to withdraw security teams from protecting Kikuyu Town against this vile man and his campaign of violence and destruction,” he said.

At the same time, Ichung’wah, who has in the recent past appeared to be a thorn in the flesh of the former DP, also revisited incidents of destruction recorded in June 2024.

The NG-CDF offices in Kikuyu were allegedly torched by organised groups, describing it as part of a continuing pattern of politically instigated violence.

Further, Ichung’wah also claimed he has received intelligence suggesting that groups are being mobilised from several counties, including Kiambu, Nairobi, Murang’a, Kirinyaga and Nyandarua.

These come after Gachagua himself wrote to the police boss on Friday, claiming that there are coordinated efforts involving goons and sections of the police to interfere with the party’s meeting scheduled for April 11.

In his letter, the opposition figure accused the Kikuyu lawmaker of making both direct and indirect threats targeting the planned rally.

The developments follow heated comments between the former DP and President William Ruto during the late Ol Kalou MP David Kiaraho’s funeral on Wednesday this week.

Gachagua asked the Head of State to tame Ichung’wah or risk losing his political legacy.
