FKF Suspends Its President, CEO Over Ksh42 Million Scandal
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohamed has been suspended by the federation’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
This follows allegations of financial impropriety, including the misappropriation of Ksh42 million meant for the African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The decision, announced on April 24, also saw NEC member Abdullahi Yussuf Ibrahim and Acting CEO Dennis Gicheru ordered to step aside to allow for investigations into the claims.
In a sweeping resolution, the NEC directed that Deputy President Macdonald Mariga immediately assume the role of FKF President in an acting capacity pending the outcome of investigations and a forensic audit.
“With immediate effect, Mr Hussein Rashid Mohammed do step aside from his role and position as President of Football Kenya Federation, Mr Abdullahi Yussuf Ibrahim do step aside from his role as nominated member of Football Kenya Federation National Executive Member and Mr Dennis Gicheru will step aside from his position and role as the Acting General Secretary of FKF,” read part of the resolutions signed by 9 of the 14 NEC members.

“This is to allow for investigations by relevant FKF, national and international bodies into alleged financial impropriety of public funds and resources, and other statutory breaches.”
At the same time, the NEC ordered the immediate freezing of all FKF bank accounts linked to the suspended President Mohamed in his official capacity, to preserve evidence and prevent any interference with ongoing investigations.
The committee also called for the appointment of an independent forensic auditor to examine all funds received by the federation from key stakeholders, including Confederation of African Football, FIFA, and the Ministry of Sports.
Three members of the NEC, including Charles Njagi, Ahmedqadar Mohammed Dabar, and Kenneth Rungu, did not attend the meeting.
The committee maintained the need to restore public confidence in the federation and safeguard the integrity of Kenyan football as key reasons behind the drastic action.
Central to the probe is the alleged theft of approximately Ksh42 million from CHAN-related accounts, raising concerns about the management of funds tied to the continental tournament.
According to the committee, the allegations facing the suspended officials include financial impropriety, conflict of interest, and non-competitive procurement of goods and services.

The embattled Mohamed on Thursday pushed back against allegations surrounding the disputed Ksh42.4 million insurance payment, terming the claims a malicious campaign intended to damage his reputation.

Nonetheless, the acting president, Mariga, has now been tasked with convening an urgent NEC meeting to chart the way forward and stabilise the federation’s operations.
