CS Murkomen Confirms Kamariny Stadium Will Host 2026 Mashujaa Day
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced that the 16th Mashujaa Day celebrations will be held at the historic Kamariny Stadium in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
This marks a major milestone in the government’s plan to decentralise national events and complete long-delayed infrastructure projects.
Murkomen announced on Saturday, May 2, during a Community Empowerment Initiative held at Kamwosor Grounds in Elgeyo Marakwet County, where he confirmed that construction works at the stadium are now actively underway.
He stated that a contractor has already been moved to the site, pointing to a renewed government commitment to complete the stadium after years of stalled progress and public debate over its delayed delivery.
The CS linked the development to President William Ruto’s earlier pledges, noting that the government is now working to ensure that the long-standing promise to complete Kamariny Stadium is finally fulfilled.
“Murkomen said, “You said that Kamariny will not be built and all sorts of other concerns, but I want to assure you that a contractor is already on-site, proceeding with the construction.”
He added that the venue will be ready for national use.
“We will be in Kamariny Stadium celebrating Mashujaa Day, and by then all the construction works will have been completed,” the CS announced.
He further announced that on October 20, Kenya will host Mashujaa Day at the stadium, marking the first time a national holiday with full military participation will be held in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
The region, once affected by insecurity and banditry challenges, has recently seen improved stability following multi-agency operations under the Operation Ondoa Uhalifu North Rift, which has been active across Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, and West Pokot counties.

Murkomen noted that the situation is steadily improving despite isolated security concerns, crediting ongoing government interventions and community cooperation for the progress.
The development ties back to a controversial 2017 campaign promise made during the Jubilee era, when Ruto, then President Uhuru Kenyatta’s running mate, pledged that Kamariny Stadium would be completed in a record six months.
Years later, the project faced delays and became a symbol of stalled sports infrastructure, drawing criticism from Kenyans and stakeholders over lost opportunities in sports development and tourism.
However, the government says renewed construction efforts and fresh prioritisation of national infrastructure are now correcting past delays, with multiple counties benefiting from new infrastructure investments.
