Police have made the first arrest in the ongoing investigation into the death of veteran Nairobi Hospital gynaecologist Dr Job Obwaka.
The authorities are moving to establish the circumstances surrounding his sudden demise.
The arrest involves a 45-year-old woman believed to have been the last person seen with the 83-year-old doctor before he collapsed, with detectives treating her as a key person of interest in the unfolding probe.
According to police, the suspect was taken into custody on Saturday morning and is currently being held as investigations intensify under officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
An official police incident report filed at Kilimani Police Station indicates that Dr Obwaka was rushed to Nairobi Hospital by ambulance on Friday evening after collapsing in Kitengela, where he had reportedly gone on personal errands.
The report states that the doctor was in the company of the arrested woman at the time of the incident, adding a crucial line of inquiry for investigators seeking to piece together his final moments.
“It was reported that Dr Job Obwaka had been brought into the facility by ambulance after collapsing in Kitengela, where he had gone on personal errands in the company of the said woman, believed to be a business partner,” part of the police report read.
Medical personnel at the hospital confirmed that the veteran medic was dead on arrival, with officers noting that while he had a history of medical conditions, the exact cause of death remains undetermined.
Police further revealed that the scene was documented and processed, with the body later moved to Lee Funeral Home pending a postmortem examination to establish the cause of death.
