Another Tragedy Hits As Mother of Utumishi Fire Victim Dies in Road Accident

A double tragedy has struck the family of one of the victims of the Utumishi Academy fire, after the mother was killed in a car accident.

According to a police report, the victim, a mother of one of the students engaged in the Utumishi fire tragedy, died in a traffic accident on the Gilgil-Nakuru highway.

The catastrophe occurred when the family rushed to the school with her husband after learning of the tragedy that had just occurred at their daughter’s school.

The student’s mother died at the scene after their vehicle collided in the Kariandusi area.

The husband narrowly escaped death but sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Whilst their daughter did not die in the fire incident, she escaped with injuries and is currently under medication.

The Utumishi fire incident left 16 students dead and 79 injured, according to records by the Ministry of Education.

The fire broke out early Thursday morning as students were deep asleep in one of the dormitories.

According to parents who visited the school, the students were unable to access the emergency door after it was allegedly locked.

According to one parent, students who were trapped in the upper section of the dormitory were forced to jump to the ground to escape the flames, with several sustaining critical injuries.

“Those who were on the upper part of the dorm, some jumped to the ground and sustained serious injuries, and that is why you hear that some are nursing critical injuries and are in the hospital,” a parent stated to the media.

Part of the reason the fire claimed so many lives, according to the latest reports, was partly due to the fact that the dormitory was locked from the inside.
