Senate Removes Sifuna From Lucrative Committee Chaired By Oburu Oginga

Senator Edwin Sifuna of Nairobi has been dismissed from the Senate Energy Committee, which is led by Oburu Odinga, the leader of the ODM Party.

This comes after the Senate announced a reorganization of its standing committees on Wednesday, June 17.

Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot announced the changes by submitting a notice of motion for the reorganization of multiple Senate committees.

The Nairobi lawmaker’s tenure on the powerful committee came to an end when Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang was chosen to take Sifuna’s spot in the Energy Committee.

“I rise to give notice of the following motion, which is a reconstitution of standing committees that, notwithstanding the resolution of the Senate made on February 12, 2025, is the approval of senators to serve in various committees,” Senator Cheruiyot announced.

“Pursuant to standing orders 197 and 191, the Senate approves the following senators nominated by the Senate Business Committee to serve in the standing committees of the Senate,” he added.

The Majority Leader also described a number of other changes that would impact other committees, such as the ICT Committee, where Nominated Senator Beatrice Ogolla will be replaced by Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu.

In the Energy Committee, Garissa County Senator Abdul Mohammed Haji has also been nominated to replace Senator Beatrice Ogolla, while Kajwang takes over Sifuna’s position.

Additionally, Senator Beatrice Ogolla has been nominated to the Agriculture Committee, replacing Kajwang following his transfer to the Energy Committee.

Senator Aaron Cheruiyot’s proposed changes are expected to take effect once they are officially approved by the Senate in line with parliamentary procedures.

Meanwhile, the changes come against the backdrop of growing tensions within ODM, where the breakaway ‘Linda Mwananchi’ faction has increasingly hit out at Oburu over the party’s direction and future.

Amid the clash, Sifuna has emerged as one of the leading voices against ODM’s political collaboration with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

While the Senate committee reshuffle is a routine reconstitution of committees, Sifuna’s removal from the Energy Committee, chaired by Oburu, is likely to fuel further speculation about the ongoing power struggle.
